Canyoning in Madeira

Rappelling · Natural water slides · Waterfall jumps · Three levels available

What to expect

Canyoning is descending a mountain canyon using rope techniques, natural water slides, jumps into pools, and rappels down waterfalls. Madeira's volcanic ribeiras, carved over thousands of years, offer some of the most spectacular canyon terrain in Europe, and most of it is completely inaccessible to anyone not in a wetsuit with a rope.

Remote Madeira runs three levels of canyoning. The progression is real: each level is a technical step up from the last, in longer canyons, higher rappels, and more demanding terrain. Whether it's your first time or you've done canyons before and want to push further, there's a level here for you.

Each level has a different departure time and meeting point. Level 2 departs at 15:00 from Curral das Freiras. Levels 3 and 4 are arranged directly with Marcos via WhatsApp — meeting point and time confirmed before your session.

Choose your level

All three levels take place in Madeira's volcanic ribeiras with a certified guide. Level 2 can be booked online. Levels 3 and 4 are arranged by WhatsApp: Marcos needs to confirm the route and availability before your session.

This activity is perfect for

🏔️ First-timers

Level 2 is designed for people who have never canyoned before. No experience needed. Just a sense of adventure.

🧗 Experienced canyon lovers

Levels 3 and 4 are serious terrain. If you've done canyons elsewhere and want to earn your way into Madeira's remote ribeiras, this is it.

👨‍👩‍👧 Small groups & couples

Maximum group sizes are kept small on purpose. A canyon day with 6 people is a different experience from a group of 20.

Frequently asked questions

If you've never done canyoning, start with Level 2, designed exactly for that. Level 3 requires at least one previous canyon session (Level 2 or equivalent). Level 4 requires both Level 2 and 3. If you have experience from canyoning elsewhere, send a WhatsApp and Marcos will tell you where you'd fit.

Level 2 is a fixed, predictable session with a set route and format, which works well with an online booking system. Levels 3 and 4 depend on conditions, the group's experience, and which canyon Marcos selects for the day. A quick conversation via WhatsApp lets him plan the right route before you arrive.

Basic swimming ability is required for all levels. You'll be in natural water with a wetsuit and equipment, so you don't need to be a strong swimmer, but you need to be comfortable in the water.

Level 2 requires no specific fitness. If you can handle a few hours of physical activity outdoors, you're fine. Levels 3 and 4 are more demanding: longer days, more technical terrain, more sustained effort. Marcos will discuss this with you before confirming your booking.

Safety comes first. If conditions in the canyon are unsafe, the session is rescheduled or refunded. Marcos monitors conditions daily and will contact you in advance if there's any concern.

Level 2 can be booked and paid directly here. Payment is processed by Stripe, one of the world's most trusted payment platforms. Your card details are never stored on our servers. You'll receive an instant confirmation by email.
